Stake Iceland

Iceland keeps gambling in the hands of a few licensed charity operators, yet most Icelandic betting reportedly happens on foreign sites, which are not blocked. Here is what that means for Icelanders using Stake.com, what the proposed reform could change, and how players fund an account.

Why Stake may not load in Iceland

Because Iceland has no gambling block list, providers such as Síminn, Vodafone and Nova do not filter Stake.com. When it fails to load, the usual causes are a slow international route (Iceland's traffic runs over a few subsea cables), a DNS issue, a filtered work or school network, or a domain Stake has rotated out.

A mirror is the same Stake platform on another address, with the same account, balance and history. The list on this page is timed from your own browser, so the fastest address on your connection comes first. Is Stake down? shows whether the platform itself is having a problem, and how to find a working Stake mirror explains how to spot a fake.

If Iceland introduces blocking under its reform, a mirror is not a way round it, and you must follow Icelandic law. Do not use a VPN to disguise your location; Stake's terms forbid it and accounts can be closed and funds withheld.

How to open Stake in Iceland with a mirror

  1. Open this page and wait a few seconds while every mirror is tested from your connection in Iceland.
  2. Pick the mirror marked with an asterisk: it answered fastest on the last check.
  3. Check that the address bar shows exactly the host from the list and a valid HTTPS padlock.
  4. Log in with your usual Stake account. Balance, history and VIP progress are the same on every mirror.
  5. If it stops loading later, come back here instead of searching: the list is re-tested on every visit.

Payments in Iceland

Most Icelanders at Stake deposit crypto. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, USDT and USDC can be deposited and withdrawn directly. Buy coins on a European exchange authorised under MiCA or registered with Iceland's Financial Supervisory Authority, then send them to your Stake deposit address. Our guides to depositing Bitcoin and depositing Litecoin explain fees and network choice.

Icelanders pay for almost everything by debit card and with apps such as Aur and Kass. These are not normally offered at Stake; if the cashier shows a card on-ramp, treat it as a convenience that may change. Set the display currency to ISK if it is offered, or to EUR or USD.

Tax deserves care. Prizes from Iceland's licensed charity lotteries are tax-free, but winnings from foreign operators can be treated as taxable income, and crypto disposals have their own rules. This is not tax advice; check Skatturinn's guidance.

Tips for players in Iceland

  • Remember that winnings from foreign operators can be taxable in Iceland; keep records.
  • Buy crypto on a MiCA-authorised or FSA-registered exchange and send a small test deposit first.
  • Use a low-fee network such as Litecoin or USDT on a cheap chain for small deposits.
  • Set the display currency to ISK or EUR so stakes are easy to judge.
  • Watch the Althing: a central regulator could bring blocking or payment rules.
  • Bookmark a working mirror for days when the international route is slow.
  • Set deposit limits and read our responsible gambling guide.

FAQ

Is Stake legal in Iceland?

Stake's terms do not exclude Iceland, and Icelandic law targets unlicensed operators rather than players. Foreign sites are not blocked, but Stake has no Icelandic licence. This is not legal advice.

Are foreign gambling sites blocked in Iceland?

No. Iceland has no law requiring internet providers to block gambling sites. A November 2025 proposal for a central regulator could change that, but nothing is in force yet.

Are Stake winnings taxed in Iceland?

They can be. Prizes from Iceland's licensed charity operators are tax-free, but winnings from foreign operators may count as taxable income. This is not tax advice; check Skatturinn's guidance.

What is the gambling age in Iceland?

18, both for Iceland's licensed operators and for Stake.

Why is Stake slow in Iceland?

Iceland's international traffic runs over a small number of subsea cables, so routes to some domains can be slow. Try the fastest mirror on this page; your account is the same on every mirror.
